Behind Our Name
What is an alternate?
Like understudies, alternates are performers who wait in the wings to fill in for a fellow cast member in need of a break from a taxing role.
We at Alternate Theatrical Productions strive to embody the humble, serving attitude of the alternate. Drawing from the local community for our original content, talent, and resources, we are preparing our stages to give our cast, crew and audiences rejuvenation for whatever stage life primarily has them in.
This theatrical community is designed for multidisciplinary multigenerational creators.
Locally Based…
“Necessity is the mother of the arts.” ~William Horman, 1519
In Dayton, Ohio, the birthplace of aviation, innovation—born of necessity—is everywhere.
At Alternate Theatrical Productions, we believe community is a human necessity that theater can illuminate; Theater, with its diverse roles for people of differing talents and abilities, binds us together around a common purpose.
The best art, we believe, is cultivated from a place of belonging, and belonging is derived from a singular purpose: to tell a story.
Since our launch in 2022, ATP has been learning to tell stories. Over the last several years, we have developed and performed two original musicals involving more than 60 individual cast and crew members and nearly 1600 audience members—like the Wright brothers, we’re learning to fly by trying to fly.
Every year, inspired by our desire to bring original content to the stage and motivated by the need for quality, family-friendly theater outlets, we are inventing things—new ways to tell stories, new opportunities for community—building on our city’s heritage. Necessity is a place to belong—a place to flourish—and we believe theater can be the vehicle taking people closer to that place.
ATP exists to engage and enrich our community through high-quality, innovative theater involving local, diverse, multigenerational talent.
